What ISO 14001 requires
The standard does not prescribe limit values. It requires you to know your environmental impacts, comply with your legal obligations, set objectives and measure their achievement — and it requires management to be accountable for this.

What companies want to know before certification
EMAS builds on ISO 14001 and goes beyond it: an audited public environmental statement, stricter requirements for legal compliance and employee involvement. ISO 14001 is more widely used internationally and has a lower entry threshold.
It does not replace sustainability reporting. But it creates exactly the data basis and process reliability from which information on energy, waste and emissions can be verifiably derived — and this is usually the bottleneck when a major customer requests data for its own reporting.
The standard does not explicitly require one. In practice, however, a greenhouse gas balance is often the most sensible way to quantify your own environmental aspects — and it is requested anyway.
