ISO 14001:2015 · Environmental management

Environmental responsibility that can be proven

Your customers are now asking for figures, not declarations of intent. ISO 14001 gives you the structure in which these figures are generated — and evidence that the supply chain accepts. In 2 to 4 weeks, or in 48 hours with an operating system.

  • Environmental aspects and legal obligations systematically recorded
  • Metrics that also serve sustainability inquiries
  • Combined with ISO 9001, just one audit program
  • Express possible if aspects and legal register are already in place

Most common combination: 9001 + 14001. Same structure, one audit, one system that is maintained afterward.

What ISO 14001 requires

The standard does not prescribe limit values. It requires you to know your environmental impacts, comply with your legal obligations, set objectives and measure their achievement — and it requires management to be accountable for this.

Determine environmental aspects

Where does your operation impact the environment? Energy, waste, water, emissions, transport, procurement. Assessed by significance, not by gut feeling.

Binding obligations

A legal register: Which environmental regulations apply to you, and how do you prove compliance? One of the most common audit findings lies here.

Objectives and programmes

Concrete, measurable objectives with responsibilities, deadlines and resources. No mere declarations of intent.

Operational control

Processes that have an environmental impact are regulated — including the requirements you pass on to suppliers.

Emergency preparedness

What happens in the event of a leak, fire, or incident? Planned and practised, not improvised.

Measuring and improving

Key figures, internal audits, management review, corrective actions.

What companies want to know before certification

EMAS builds on ISO 14001 and goes beyond it: an audited public environmental statement, stricter requirements for legal compliance and employee involvement. ISO 14001 is more widely used internationally and has a lower entry threshold.

Where 14001 makes the difference

Production and metalworking

Direct environmental impacts and regulatory requirements. A metal construction company consolidates hazardous substance, waste, and emissions records in one system instead of five folders.

Construction and building materials

Tenders evaluate environmental management as an award criterion. A construction company receives additional points in public procurement for certified environmental management.

Logistics and transport

Emissions are the core business risk. A haulage company must provide fleet data because its industrial customer needs it for their own balance sheet.

Food and packaging

Water, waste, packaging law. A food business links packaging obligations with waste and water metrics.

Chemistry and laboratory

Hazardous substances and incident prevention. A laboratory operation demonstrates emergency organization and legal compliance in a structured manner.

Energy and building technology

Credibility in its own market. A provider of building technology proves that it applies internally what it sells.

Trade and wholesale

Requirements from the supply chain. A wholesaler receives a sustainability questionnaire from a trading partner and delivers data instead of estimates.

Services and IT

Green IT and procurement. An IT service provider makes energy consumption and hardware lifecycle measurable.

Four steps — at the pace that suits you

After certification, a surveillance audit follows every year, and recertification after three years. Both are included in the price.

  1. Register and clarify scope

You tell us how big your company is, where you work, and what you do. We explain how extensive the audit will be.

    1 to 2 days

One registration interview for all standards

  2. Prepare

You use templates, task lists, and notes on missing documents. You don't start with a blank page.

1 to 6 weeks, depending on pace

    Shared documentation

  3. Two-stage audit

First we review your documents and whether you are ready. Then we check whether the rules really work in your daily work.

    1 to 4 days

A combined audit plan, one appointment

  4. Decision and certificate

An independent person makes the decision. If successful, you receive your digital certificate, visible in the online register.

    1 to 3 days

A certificate document with multiple standards

Step 2 is the only step whose duration depends on the chosen pace: with Express it is skipped because the system is already running. With Standard it takes one to three weeks, with Guided up to six.

You set the pace. We tell you which one is realistic.

We don't audit more superficially or more briefly than others. What we mainly save is waiting time. All three speeds are audited according to the same rules.

For ISO 14001, express is possible as soon as environmental aspects and the legal register are in place. For manufacturing companies, an on-site visit for the inspection is usually added — then 48 hours becomes a scheduling matter. Talk to us early, and we'll plan it in.

How extensive the audit will be depends on your number of employees, your locations and the nature of your work. Not sure which column applies to you? Write to us — we'll tell you in a short conversation what's possible for you.

Structured, risk-based and transparent: EUCERTA audited our management systems to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 27001 factually and objectively. The entire certification process was efficient, easy to follow and professional - we rate the collaboration as excellent.

As consultants we have a certain occupational hazard: we do not just want to know what needs to be done - we want to do it ourselves too. Four standards at once is a fairly ambitious practical test for that. EUCERTA turned it into a clear, manageable process. The pre-audit was particularly convincing: no quoting of clauses for the file, but concrete findings that led straight into action. And the board? After a short settling-in period, nobody explained it any more - people simply used it. That is exactly how a tool should work.
